If you watch much paranormal television, you’ve probably noticed a trend. On television, many of the “serious” paranormal teams refuse to consider psychic information in their investigation because it isn’t scientific. Ironically, this trend away from engaging psychics in paranormal investigation flies in the face of research conducted by the true pioneers of scientific paranormal investigation – parapsychologists and psychical researchers.

Parapsychologists have engaged in scientific paranormal research using the scientific method under controlled conditions since 1882. In that time, one of the main things they have established with regards to “ghost” research is this: all research involving ghosts is actually psychic research because all ghost events are psychic events. For more information on this, you can read my previous post, Paranormal Phenomena Identified

Parapsychological science has established that, in order to truly study ghost phenomena, one must engage psychic abilities. Therefore, refusing to acknowledge psychic contributions during a television paranormal investigation simply doesn’t make sense.

Psychic Energy – It’s No Big Deal

I firmly believe everyone has psychic abilities. I’m in good company on this. Psychics like Edgar Cayce and paranormal scientists (parapsychologists) like Barry Taff and Loyd Auerbach have all made similar statements. Nearly everyone can relate at least one or two of those uncanny “coincidences” that occur in life – knowing who is going to call just before the phone rings, etc.

The problem for most of us is we simply refuse to tune into it because it doesn’t make sense given the current skepticism surrounding psychic abilities. It’s still considered a little bit fringe to believe you may be psychic, even though I believe everyone is. Intuition is actually a normal and necessary part of the animal kingdom. Intuition helps smaller and weaker animals evade predators. You can read more about intuition in my article for Paranormal Underground, embedded below.

The Way We Sense Psychic Energy

While everyone probably has some level of psychic ability, not everyone processes psychic energy in the same way. This explains why some people may be able to hear voices while others see things or have feelings.

There are several different ways in which people process psychic energy, and it varies from person to person. You may have only one – or you may have a combination of all of these various sensory abilities.

  • Clairvoyance: Also known as “psychic seeing,” clairvoyance is the ability to perceive psychic information in pictures.
  • Clairaudience: With psychic hearing, clairaudient people can hear sounds either audibly or in their head that conveys psychic information.
  • Clairsentience: Clairsentient people may have physical sensations, smells, tastes, or they may just have the information come into their head fully formed.
  • Empathy: This is the ability to experience the emotions of others psychically.
  • Telepathy: This describes the ability to know or sense what another is thinking.

Types of Psychic Abilities

Along with sensing psychic energy in different ways, people also have different types of abilities.
  • Mediumship: The ability to communicate with the disincarnate
  • Remote viewing: The ability to visualize a location and its activities from a remote location.
  • Extrasensory Perception (ESP): The ability to read another's mind
  • Psychokinesis: The ability to manipulate matter using only mental energy
  • Healing: The ability to positively affect living organisms for the purpose of healing, which may include medical intuition.
  • Precognition: Seeing the future
  • Psychometry: Gleaning psychic information by touching an object
  • Scrying: Viewing psychic information by gazing into an object
  • Channeling: Allowing an outside source, such as a spirit guide, to provide you with psychic information
  • Automatic writing/drawing: Writing or drawing without conscious thought to convey psychic information
  • Divination: Receiving psychic information using a device such as a pendulum or dowsing rods
  • Physical mediumship: Facilitating physical manifestations by and from the dead

Does SSPR Engage Psychics?

At SSPR, we feel our bodies and minds are our best paranormal equipment. Since no psychic is ever 100 percent correct, we do not rely on psychic information as our sole source of evidence; however, we do consider any such information as part of a comprehensive evaluation when we investigate. When our team members do receive information they perceive to be psychic, we ask that they write it down in a notebook instead of conveying it aloud so they don’t contaminate others’ perceptions.
